0% APR For 12 Month Balance Transfers vs. 0% No Fee Offers:
Recently, no fee balance transfer credit cards with 0% interest free terms for 12 months have almost completely disappeared. The only current offers in this category are Capital One balance transfer credit cards. Because of this, it is important to determine which is more beneficial, a no fee balance transfer credit card from Capital One®, or a 0% balance transfer credit card from a different issuer. In most cases, the best way to save money is to transfer balances to no fee 0% cards. However, there are a few cases when selecting a card with a balance transfer fee may make sense.

Possible Scenarios:

  • If you already have a credit card from Capital One: We have never come across an issuer that will let you transfer a balance from one of their cards to another one of their cards. Capital One is not an exception to this rule. If you are carrying a balance on a Capital One credit card and are looking to transfer that balance, you must look to another issuer. If this is your situation, we suggest that you apply for a 0% offer from a different issuer.
  • If you don't think you can pay the balance off by the end of the 0% term: If you don't think that you can pay off the balance transferred by the end of the 0% term and there is an offer with a lower variable rate (that you think you will approved for based on your credit score), then you may want to consider applying for that offer. Most balance transfer fees are 3% of the amount moved to your new card, so if you think that you can qualify for a lower rate credit card, you may save money in the long run depending on how long you carry a balance.
  • If you really like the rewards program associated with another offer: Rewards programs are enticing aspects of modern plastic. If a particular rewards card accepts balance transfers, but charges a fee, you have a few options. Your first option is transferring your balance to the rewards card that you have your eye on. Option two is transferring your balance to a 0% no fee balance transfer credit card AND applying for that rewards card provided that both cards are issued by different banks.
